California Grill and Bar is a full-service American restaurant tucked above street level in a commercial building along Penny Lane in Watsonville. Its unassuming entrance—accessible by elevator or stairs—leads into a cozy, pub-like dining room where dark wood booths and tables give the space a relaxed yet polished feel. This is a spot where locals come to enjoy hearty meals made with farm-to-table, organic ingredients, making it well suited for everything from leisurely weekday lunches to casual dinners with friends or family.

The menu leans into classic American comfort fare with a thoughtful, refined twist. Expect generous portions, from well-prepared prime rib and garlic bread to lighter salads packed with fresh greens. The kitchen shows versatility too, balancing dishes like a rich Florentine Eggs Benedict alongside seafood options such as artichoke crab cakes or blackened swordfish with a Cajun kick. Breakfast offerings like pancakes and various scrambles hint that morning visits reward those seeking a filling start to the day. The drink menu, including Bloody Marys, pairs nicely with brunch or a relaxed meal.

Service here reflects a small-town warmth, with younger servers who are still finding their rhythm but eager to please. Staff engagement often enhances the atmosphere, adding a friendly and informal layer to the dining experience without rushing guests along.

Because of its upstairs location, California Grill and Bar feels a little removed from the street’s noise, which sets a calm tone and makes it suitable for conversations, family meals, or a drink with coworkers after hours. Visitors who appreciate straightforward, well-crafted American fare with organic touches — and who don’t mind a spot that leans more on substance than flash — will find plenty to like.

For locals and travelers passing through Watsonville, it’s a dependable choice when craving classics like a well-cooked ribeye, fresh salads, or a cozy brunch plate. Midday and early evening are often the best times to swing by to avoid peak rushes and enjoy a more relaxed table experience.

We came here as a recommendation from the front desk person at the hotel we're staying. Everything was exceptional. Tasty bread for starters. We tried the onion ring appetizer which were just the right amount of breading and crispy. The salads were fresh and flavorful. The prime rib was a perfect cut and cooked exactly how it was ordered. The portions are exceptionally generous. So much so, we needed to go containers. The service was friendly and prompt. Would definitely recommend for anyone in the area to visit here.

Great drinks and the farm to table ingredients are awesome. High school servers need more training and experience for sure. Super nice and respectful though. Will definitely come again!

We stopped here for lunch on our drive from San Francisco to Carmel and had such a wonderful experience. Our waitress, Tinkerbell, was incredibly kind and full of positive energy — she truly made our visit special. The food was excellent and portions were generous — we couldn’t even finish everything! We had burgers, a sandwich, and the Reuben, all delicious. Even though it’s not on our usual route, Tinkerbell will be the main reason we come back if we ever drive this way again.

When we arrived we were amazed that this restaurant was located in the upstairs of a commercial building with access via elevator or stairs. Our waitress Tinkerbell was extremely courteous and colorful sporting a lot of bling and looking very artsy. The decor had a pub like feel to it with dark wood booths and tables. The menu choices were very varied and healthy, and we discovered all the food was sourced from organic local farms and the restaurant was actually owned by a farming company. My hubby had the salmon dinner and I had the fried artichokes and the flavors were exquisite! The beer was local and organic. We marked this in our notes for a place to definitely come back to in the future. Highly recommend.

Great staff, good food, large portions. Next visit. Staff was still very nice and attentive. My fish was a bit dry, like it had been cook way before than warmed. Potato's were great, clam chowder had good taste but not many clams, veggies were very under seasoned. Prices were high, as they are everywhere.

The service was excellent and attentive, but not overly so. The food was so fresh and delicious tasting. The portions were huge. I made 3 meals out of my entree because we made the mistake of ordering the delicious and filling fried artichoke hearts appetizer. Oh yes, and the fresh bread. The desserts looked delicious, but we absolutely had no room for anything else. The wine was value prices for the large pours. We received an excellent value for the price paid.
